Kashmir in November vs December: Which Month Is Better?

Kashmir in November or December? Choose November for the last chinar colours, the saffron harvest, mild sunny days and quiet, better-value travel. Choose December for snow in Gulmarg, the start of the ski season and Christmas and New Year in the mountains. Late November sits in between: cold and quiet, with a chance of the first snow but no guarantee. This guide compares the two months side by side and answers the questions travellers ask us most.

Quick answer If snow is the main reason for your trip, go after 20 December. If you want autumn colours, fewer people and lower prices, go in the first half of November. Late November and early December are good-value in-between weeks, but treat snow as a bonus, not a promise.

Is late November the right time to visit Kashmir?

Yes, if… you are happy with cold, clear days and a quiet valley, and you do not need snow. By late November most chinar leaves have fallen, the saffron harvest is over, and Srinagar is cold in the mornings and evenings but often sunny by day. The first snow of the season often reaches Gulmarg in the second half of November, but some years stay dry until December. Hotels are usually quieter and easier to book than in late December.

Good forCouples and families who want Kashmir without the crowds, travellers on a budget, and anyone happy to take snow as a bonus.
Not ideal forChinar photography (go in the first half of November) or a guaranteed snow trip (go after 20 December).
Plan forOne flexible day in Gulmarg, in case fresh snow arrives or roads close briefly after a snowfall.

Which month is better for snow?

December Gulmarg usually has snow by mid to late December, and the ski season starts once there is enough of it. In November, snow is possible in Gulmarg and on higher ground around Pahalgam and Sonamarg, usually late in the month, but it can melt within days. For the deepest snow, January and February are better still; see best time to see snow in Kashmir.

Which month is cheaper?

November In most years it is low season between autumn and the winter holidays, so hotels are quieter. Early December is also good value. Prices and demand rise from about 20 December to the New Year, when Gulmarg hotels fill first. Our taxi with driver costs from ₹2,000 a day with fuel, tolls and driver included.

Which month is colder?

December Srinagar drops from about 10–17°C by day in November to about 5–10°C in December, and nights fall below freezing in both. Gulmarg is around 0–5°C by day in December and much colder at night. Pack thermals and a warm jacket for either month; see what to wear in Kashmir in winter.

Early December or late December?

Early DecemberQuieter and cheaper, cold, with a fair chance of snow in Gulmarg but no guarantee.
Late DecemberThe best chance of snow, the start of Chillai Kalan on 21 December, and the busiest, most expensive days of the winter from about 22 December to 2 January. Book early.

Roads and what is open

In November the Mughal Road, Sinthan Top, the Zojila Pass to Ladakh and the road to Gurez can close after the first heavy snow; by December most of them are shut for the winter. The roads to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg usually stay open in both months, with short closures after heavy snow, and cars need snow chains beyond Tangmarg after a snowfall. The Gulmarg Gondola runs in both months, with Phase 2 to Apharwat depending on the weather. The Tulip Garden is closed in both; it opens in spring.

Which is better for a honeymoon?

For snow and a winter-wonderland feel, choose mid to late December and book early. For quiet, romantic shikara rides, golden gardens and better rates, choose the first half of November. Late November and early December offer a quiet middle ground with a chance of snow.

I'm Ahmad Suhail, born and raised in Srinagar. In 2022 I founded Kashmir Tour Packages Taxi — a licensed taxi and tour operator registered with the Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Department — because I saw too many visitors arrive in Kashmir with bad information, unreliable drivers, and no idea what was actually worth seeing.
Every article I write comes from personal experience on these routes: the correct season to visit Thajiwas Glacier, the checkpoints you'll cross on the way to Gulmarg, where the road to Betaab Valley gets narrow, what Amarnath Yatra pilgrims actually need to know before they book a taxi. I don't write from Wikipedia. I write from having driven these roads myself, with guests in the back seat.
Our fleet covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, Amarnath, and long-haul routes to Leh and Jammu under All India Tourist Vehicle Permits. If something I've written about a route, price, or season seems off — call me directly on +91 9149531004. I answer that number myself.
