Kashmir in November 2026: Weather, Chinars, First Snow and What to Expect

Kashmir in November is the bridge between autumn and winter. The chinar trees in Srinagar are at their richest red and gold in the first half of the month, the saffron fields of Pampore are in flower, and the first snow often dusts Gulmarg in the second half. It is also one of the quietest, best-value months to visit. This guide covers the weather, chinars, saffron, first snow, what is open and closed, and how to plan.

Quick answer: Go in the first half of November for chinar colours and saffron, or late November for a chance of the first snow in Gulmarg. Days are mild and sunny, nights are near freezing, and hotels are quieter than in December. Pack warm layers, and do not count on snow this early.

Weather in Kashmir in November

Days are usually clear and pleasant in the sun; nights turn cold, and the month gets steadily colder from start to end. These are typical ranges, and a western disturbance can bring rain, snow and a sudden cold spell.

Place Daytime Night Snow
Srinagar About 10–17°C About −2 to 3°C Rare
Gulmarg About 3–10°C About −6 to 0°C Possible, more likely late in the month
Pahalgam About 7–14°C About −4 to 2°C Possible on higher ground

The sun sets around 5:30 pm in Srinagar at the start of the month and around 5:15 pm by the end, so plan sightseeing for the morning and early afternoon.

Chinar colours in November

The chinar trees usually reach their deepest red and amber in late October and the first half of November; the exact week shifts with the weather. The best places to see them are Naseem Bagh, Nishat and Shalimar gardens, the Dal Lake boulevard and Char Chinar island. See our chinar colour calendar, the chinar autumn story and Char Chinar island.

Saffron harvest in Pampore

The saffron fields of Pampore, about 11 km from Lal Chowk on the Srinagar–Jammu highway, usually flower in the last week of October and the first half of November. The purple flowers are picked by hand in the early morning. Read our saffron harvest tour guide, and go early in the month to be sure of seeing the fields in bloom.

Will there be snow in November?

Sometimes. The first snow of the season often reaches Gulmarg and the higher ground around Pahalgam and Sonamarg in November, usually in the second half, but some years stay dry until December. Snow in Srinagar is rare this early. If snow is the main reason for your trip, choose late December to February; compare the months in our best time to see snow in Kashmir guide and check the Kashmir snow forecast before you book.

Where to go in November

Srinagar

The heart of a November trip: chinar walks in the Mughal gardens, a morning shikara ride on a misty Dal Lake, a night on a houseboat, and the old city bazaars. See shikara ride prices.

Gulmarg

Golden meadows early in the month and, with luck, the first snow later on. The Gulmarg Gondola runs, with Phase 2 to Apharwat depending on the weather. The ski season does not start until there is enough snow, usually in mid to late December. Helicopter ride bookings for the winter open on 20 November 2026; see Gulmarg helicopter booking.

Pahalgam

Quiet, with autumn colours along the Lidder river and cold, clear mornings. Betaab and Aru valleys are usually reachable until heavy snow arrives.

Sonamarg

Beautiful in late autumn, but very cold. Check the road status after any snowfall.

What is open and closed in November

  • Open: Srinagar sightseeing and the Mughal gardens, Dal Lake shikaras and houseboats, Gulmarg and the Gondola (Phase 2 weather permitting), Pahalgam, and the Pampore saffron fields while in bloom.
  • Weather-dependent: the Mughal Road, Sinthan Top, the Zojila Pass to Ladakh and the road to Gurez can close after the first heavy snow, and most of them are shut for the winter by December. Check before planning a drive on them.
  • Closed: the high-altitude summer treks and the Tulip Garden (it opens in spring).

Is November a good time to visit?

  • Good for: chinar and autumn photography, saffron, couples and families who want Kashmir quiet, and travellers looking for better hotel rates than in December.
  • Think twice if: snow is a must; it is possible but not reliable until late December.
  • Diwali: 8 November 2026 brings a short rush of visitors; see our Diwali package.

What to pack

  • Warm layers: thermals for the evenings, a sweater or fleece, and a warm jacket
  • A woollen cap and gloves for mornings, evenings and Gulmarg
  • Comfortable shoes with a good grip for garden walks and, later in the month, possible snow
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, moisturiser and lip balm for the dry air

I'm Ahmad Suhail, born and raised in Srinagar. In 2022 I founded Kashmir Tour Packages Taxi — a licensed taxi and tour operator registered with the Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Department — because I saw too many visitors arrive in Kashmir with bad information, unreliable drivers, and no idea what was actually worth seeing.
Every article I write comes from personal experience on these routes: the correct season to visit Thajiwas Glacier, the checkpoints you'll cross on the way to Gulmarg, where the road to Betaab Valley gets narrow, what Amarnath Yatra pilgrims actually need to know before they book a taxi. I don't write from Wikipedia. I write from having driven these roads myself, with guests in the back seat.
Our fleet covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, Amarnath, and long-haul routes to Leh and Jammu under All India Tourist Vehicle Permits. If something I've written about a route, price, or season seems off — call me directly on +91 9149531004. I answer that number myself.
